Cloaks, boots, brightly colored props, and imagined identities occupy the frame. It is a scene of performance, transformation, and play. Yet the true subject lies closer to the ground. A cane rests diagonally across the stone pavement, temporarily separated from its owner. Unlike the surrounding costumes, it is not pretending to be anything. It has no role to perform.
